The Effects of Gottman`s Theory-Based Marital Relationship Enhancement Program on Intimacy, Communication and Marital Satisfaction during The Transition to Parenthood

Abstract
The present study examined the effects of a marital relationship enhancement program developed based on Gottman¡¯s theory on the levels of intimacy, communication, and marital satisfaction. Specifically with a sample who are in transition to parenthood. The program consists of 8 sessions. 5 married couples were assigned to an experimental group and 5 married couples were assigned to a control group. The control group participated to the present study. Three outcome measures including Interpersonal Relationship Scale (IRS), Marital Communication Inventory (MCI), and Korean-Marital Satisfaction Inventory (K-MSI) were completed at pretest, posttest, and 8-month follow-up. The program contributed to significant improvement in intimacy and communication. Marital satisfaction was identified in comparison to those in control group. In addition, the effects were maintained until the 8-month follow-up. Implications, limitations and suggestions were further elaborated in the present study.
